Session 7: Working large

This week, we changed over to having Dwayne as our Life Drawing lecturer. And were also introduced to a brand new challenge; scale and size. Previously we had learned the basics in using materials such as cartridge paper with paint, pencil, conte-crayon, etc. This time we were given the choice to tackle a larger scale canvas that was roughly the same size as an A1 sheet of paper.

It was heavily advised by Dwayne to start with a few prelimary sketches that we were to do before the big piece of the session, where we would assess the room around us and see what points of view would be best to draw, paint or etch from. We had all just stayed where we were initially anyway, but it was intended to be an exercise in points of view and I found it to be helpful in getting a more 3-Dimensional understanding of how to sketch out the object/model.

That leaves us with the main event, which was to take either a piece of cartridge paper, or the large card sheets provided by Dwayne. I had decided to take on the card, as it was a new way to approach life drawing that I never really tried before.

Dwayne had also said to us that this session's goal was to create one big, fully developed piece of work that would be split into 2 pieces, the top or bottom we start with would be done first at one side of the room, and then we would all switch places afterwards to imagine what the bottom or top looked like beforehand and improvise the drawings second part. The goal was reiterated to not be an exact recreation of what Nick looked like, but rather what we had thought he looked like and how we would approach it with our media choices. I personally decided to go with black and white paint, and mixed the two together to create a very light grey for those slightly shaded, but not quite dark areas that were being shown from the light source.
The end result wasn't exactly what I think I wanted, but nor was it a total disaster. I had some issues in trying to imagine where Nick's legs were swivelled and placed parallel to what they looked like on the other side of the room. Proportionally it doesn't exactly match, as Nick's hand is very enlarged and the waist is slightly elongated as though he were standing rather than sitting. I think if I were to give it another try, I would have better captured the outcome as when I did it, I realised a lot of errors halfway through the painting process.

In my own time, I plan to rectify the perspective and return to this painting so I can have a more presentable piece to show on this site.
