Anna Rodigihiero

Picture
As we move from Adobe Photoshop and onto Illustrator, we were tasked with a surprise workshop on recreating a given artist/illustrator's work that was made in Adobe Illustrator beforehand. My given Illustrator was a lady called "Anna Rodigihiero", who has made a presence online through her instagram page.

My chosen piece to recreate:

Anna's back catalogue consists of a lot of illustrations that are very graphic design-inspired, as the bulk of the work she does is solid colour done in Illustrator, but includes occasional imagery that's been taken from elsewhere (such as the cork above), and the use of integrated typography that's been brought into the illustration work itself.

I decided to work on recreating her 'Tipsy Cat' illustration (albeit not fully aware of the crude depiction of genitalia until it was pointed out to me by Dwayne). Nevertheless I continued on with what I picked regardless and learned a good amount of a software I previously had used, but never fully delved into proper. The Illustration above is the original piece, which shows a humorous picture of an intoxicated cat dancing, through a frame of an alcoholic beverage label. The colours are mostly solid bright red and mustard-yellow, with a little bit of black thrown in for type and singling out the core image of the drunk cat themselves.

Tutorial & Reference Material:

As I used Illustrator, I ran into all kinds of problems, as it was a new way to draw and had a new variety of tools to use. Shown below are a few methods, techniques and works-arounds for this workshop.

Recreating The 'Tipsy Cat':

The Result:

Picture
In the end, I tried the very best I could within the time window I had to recreate the illustration. I feel like there is still a lot to learn about Illustrator by this point, but that can be achieved relatively quickly as a lot of the tools I need are already there in Illustrator, and I have the internet at my disposal to search it up in case anything is not clear.

Enamel Pins:

The next task we were given, was to create customised, mock enamel pin designs, fully kitted with our own packaging in the correct size.

I have collected a few enamel pins of my own, and have them attached to the back of my bag. These pins shown below range from merchandise of things I am a fan of like YouTube Channels Game Grumps and OneyPlays, video games like Darkstalkers and Devil May Cry. To more ethereal and fantastical designs of moths, the moon, roses, and fireflies.

Finalised Character/Pin Designs:

Recreation Of Original Characters:

These are the finalised results of the characters that are to be enamel pins. I applied the recently learned knowledge of using the pen tool, and accordingly drew around my previously made drawings in my sketchbook to follow on from.

At first I started with very accurately designed versions of the characters from their source material, but would later experiment and create a new style to reimagine them in.

My Redesigns:

After studying what made the original designs work, I had taken on the challenge to keep the same elements but rearrange them into something that fits in my artstyle. Sonic's artstyle is inherently cartoon/anime inspired, so it wasn't hard to re-imagine them, but finer details and values such as their proportions, clothing, and facial expressions; were slightly altered in my own style to keep the balance between my own redesign and the original designs.

Just out of my own personal enjoyment, I decided to do two other characters I really like. The Crow (left) and Venom (Right). I really enjoyed this segment, as I feel like I've had a burst of learning multiple things about Adobe Illustrator, all in one go.
