Painting (Light Sourcing)

This week was very similar to the previous, however we were also introduced to a new way of shading and lighting our drawing. Tony had given us black card; and we were given white conte-crayon to draw with. Our goal for this session was to try out ways in capturing the light source that bounced off of Nick, and apply it according to our drawing, instead of previously when we shaded in the shadows that formed around Nick.

I found this a good challenge; as it was testing my vision for seeing where the light was wrapped around our model. Though I definitely broke anatomy a few times as this was the first time I had ever tried this kind of drawing, but I definitely feel like I have learned a valuable piece of knowledge in lighting. I plan to continue to study this kind of light sourcing technique in my own time and in independent drawing.

Shortly after however, I returned back to shading on white paper instead, I practised this time with a bit of water and paint to shade in detail onto Nick. This is something I will need to practise more as well, as it's something I started to understand a bit better near the end of this session.

In my final painting of the session, I got a bit ambitious and attempted to juggle a full-on paint piece with monochromatic tones that bounce off one-another to reveal light and shadow in tandem with one another. I did this because I wanted to experiment and attempt something new, as I want to push myself and come closer to understanding new methods and techniques. Whereas I feel like I did somewhat well in tones, I think my perspective work needs further revision, as the bench appears from thin to thick from each corner, and the shadowing below doesn't signify it properly. I do feel a sense of progression still with how I shaded Nick, and will try to carry it further into the next session when we are introduced to colour.

Independent Drawing: "Under The Influence" (Drawing like Egon Schiele)

After being promptly introduced to the influential, yet also controversial artist; Egon Schiele, we were filled in on this weeks' independent drawing task and that was to replicate a similar style of technical drawing that he did in his time as an artist. The techniques he would use in drawing, would be to draw a detailed area of a person or object first, and then lead the lineart into lesser detailed areas, filled with a majority of negative space and a singular line. Sometimes elements of colour and texture work can be found in his work, but used in a very minimalistic way to make use of the negative space left over.
